Mastering the Art of Color.
When it comes to fashion, colour is one of the most powerful tools at your disposal. The right colours can transform not only an outfit but also the way we feel. I am going to take you through some colour theory today to help you understand how colour can not only transform your style but your mood too.
So, Let’s start with the basics.
The Color Wheel
The colour wheel is your best friend when it comes to understanding how colours relate to each other. There are primary colours (red, blue, yellow), which combine to create secondary colours (green, orange, purple), and then we have tertiary colours, which are blends of primary and secondary colours. But it doesn’t stop there!
Colours are also categorised into warm and cool tones. Warm tones, like red, orange, and yellow, tend to feel energizing and vibrant, while cool tones, like blue, green, and purple, are calming and soothing. Knowing this can help you decide the mood you want to portray with your outfit.
😍One of the keys to looking and feeling your best in any outfit is choosing colours that compliment your skin tone.
Not sure where to start? Let’s break it down:
Cool Skin Tones
If your skin has pink, red, or bluish undertones, you likely have a cool skin tone.
Jewel tones like sapphire blue, emerald green, and amethyst purple will make your complexion glow.
Neutrals like crisp white, navy, and cool greys are also your best friend.
Warm Skin Tones:
If your skin has yellow, peachy, or golden undertones, you’re in the warm category.
Earthy tones like olive, rust, and mustard will bring out the warmth in your skin.
Neutrals like cream, taupe, and chocolate brown will harmonize beautifully with your natural colouring.
Neutral Skin tones:
If you have a mix of both cool and warm undertones, consider yourself lucky—you can wear almost any colour! Focus on what makes you feel confident, and don’t be afraid to experiment.
When deciding which colours work for you, we always look in the mirror and note if the colour adds colour to our cheeks and lips or if it draws out colour. Have you ever gotten dressed and looked in the mirror and instantly felt older? That’s because it’s likely that the colour you were wearing wasn’t right for your skin tone which can often intensify lines and creases in your skin as well lightening your complexion making you look and feel older! Crazy right!
In saying that, I believe ANYONE can wear ANY colour, it’s just how we apply the colour that makes a huge difference. If you love a colour but find that it’s making you look tired or older, try incorporate it in an accessory or on the bottom of the body away from your face. This way you can still play into colours you love without the impact it can have close to your face.
Next up…Let’s talk about what’s trending right now
This season, it’s all about buttery yellows, denim blues, and rich navy—colours that are both timeless and on-trend. These shades are perfect for creating a fresh, modern wardrobe that feels current yet effortlessly stylish.
We continue to see leopard coming through really strong and pinks and reds remain a large statement across most brands. These colours and prints are great to show some personality and add a fun vibe to your look.
At the end of the day, fashion is about self-expression, and colour is a powerful tool in your style kit. Don’t be afraid to experiment and find what makes you feel most confident. If you’re new to playing with colour, start small—accessories are a great way to add an element of colour without overpowering. As you become more comfortable, you can start incorporating more colour into your outfits.
Remember, there are no hard rules when it comes to fashion. It’s all about what makes you feel good. So go ahead, play with colour, heck even break your own style rules and let your wardrobe be a reflection of your unique personality.
